<p><font size="3">Maori warriors wove bundled <em>harakeke</em> into armored vests to deflect the arrows of other indigenous tribes.  When Europeans invaded New Zealand they learned that the <em>harakeke </em>vests also deflected musket balls at long range -– forcing them to fight close-in to win.</font></p>
